Warfield CE Primary School

Our Curriculum

At Warfield, we pride ourselves on delivering a broad and balanced curriculum, that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and is also relevant and appropriate for our learning community. We have high expectations for all learners and ensure that they are all supported to make good progress from their starting points.

We organise our learning into topics, which are driven by our Science and Humanities curriculum. Our cross curricular topic approach is underpinned by the effective systematic teaching of core knowledge and skills in English and Maths.  Much of our work in English is closely linked to the main topics we are covering.  This ensures a close link with systematic development of phonic and reading skills and an immersion in a breadth of quality texts that in turn inspire the children’s writing.

Our curriculum provides all our children with the experiences and firm foundations of knowledge that they need now and in their future. We use first hand experiences and enrichment activities throughout our topics to give our children concrete hooks to hang their learning onto. This enables them to build a meaningful cognitive framework that helps make connections and builds toward forming bigger and more complex  ideas and so strengthening their learning.

These contextual experiences include visits into school, local investigations and exploration and trips off site further afield.  We further contextualise our learning through cross curricular events such as STEM week or World Book Day – bringing learning to life, providing opportunities to explore links in their learning and building their cultural capital in readiness for their next steps along their learning journey.

Due to the involvement of all teaching staff in the development and review of our curriculum subject knowledge in each year group is good.  Colleagues support each other through subject specialisms and all teachers are given the opportunity to develop leadership in a specific subject area. Some areas of the curriculum are delivered by specialist teachers.  In music, French and PE this specialist teaching ensures consistently high levels of content and teaching throughout the school.

Good subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding ensures careful planning of learning experiences giving our children many opportunities to practice, consolidate and embed skills and knowledge enabling the children to retain and retrieve the information they have attained. The children have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding through our ‘Big Questions’ which bring together prior and current learning in their topics.
