Welcome to Reception Butterflies and Ladybirds!
We hope you all took the chance to relax and enjoy the summer break and have had some time with your family and friends.
Our first Autumn term topic is ‘Super Me'.
During this term we will be developing our concentration and oracy skills and talking about our families, interests, friends and homes.
We will begin the year by reading lots of different books related to starting school including The Colour Monster Goes to School by Anna Llenas and Starting School by Janet and Allan Alberg. We will continue reading a range of books throughout the term related to homes including the traditional tale, The Little Red Hen and books related to friendship and sharing including The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.
We will be concentrating on giving meaning to the marks we make and also practising writing our own name. We will explore making different marks and developing how we hold our writing tools.
At the beginning of term, we will begin to share story n=books and school reading books will come home with your children. Theses books have no words but are the beginning of our reading journey. Please share the books with your children, discuss the pictures. Talk about the places and characters and what is happening as you move through the story.
We will begin our daily phonics sessions very soon and look forward to learning lots of new sounds and how we put them together to read words all by ourselves!
In Number, we will be developing a solid understanding of counting accurately and working on our understanding of 1:1 correspondence. We will also look at patterns and the language and meaning of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ when comparing two sets of objects.
In RE we will be introducing and developing our Reflection Area as well as looking at a few Bible stories including Noah’s Ark and the Creation story. We will explore some of the faiths we hold and talk about our celebrations and traditions.
During the topic ‘Super Me’ we will take the opportunity to explore family customs, recognising important people in our own family and discussing significant events like birthdays!
It is important for children to recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others therefore we will be celebrating how unique we are by painting a self-portrait and developing a family tree.
We will have small group PE lessons every Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child comes into school wearing their PE kit on both days.
During our morning session, the children will have the opportunity to eat some fruit provided by the school for their mid-morning snack. If your child is bringing in their own snack, please ensure that it is either fruit or vegetables. Every child in Reception is also able to enjoy a meal at lunchtime that is provided by the school and these are free. Please consider making use of this entitlement, you may select the meal before the day with you child online at home or they may select a meal in class on the day. If your child is bringing in their own packed lunch, please ensure that it is a healthy balanced meal with fruits or vegetables. We do have children with severe allergies across the school, therefore we ask that NO NUTS are given within lunch boxes please! We also ask you to provide water in your child's named water bottle, we can refill them during the day.
As a polite reminder, please only send your child in with a book bag, water bottle, jumper, coat and if necessary a lunch box.
Please remember, we are always happy to answer any questions you may have with regards to your child’s school life at the end of the school day.
We can't wait to get to know your children (and you) better and hope you are just as excited to start school!
